Silk Press in Tokyo: A 4C Hair Transformation for Smooth, Silky Results

目次

Introduction

Hello everyone! I’m Kumiko, a freelance hair stylist based in Tokyo, and I specialize in working with curly and coily hair. If you’re searching for an English-speaking hair salon in Tokyo that understands silk press for curly hair, you’re in the right place. Many of my international clients with very curly hair in Japan have had difficulty finding stylists experienced with very curly textures – that’s exactly why I’m here to help! Today, I want to share a recent Silk Press Tokyo experience I had with an American client who has beautiful type 4B–4C natural curls. Her curls tended to look dry and puffy in our humid climate, so she was excited to see if we could achieve a smooth, shiny finish without compromising her hair’s health.

Before – The client’s 4C hair appeared dry, frizzy, and puffy before we began the silk press. Tight curls like hers often don’t reflect light well, which can make the hair look dull and dry. To address this, I planned a thorough silk press session focused on infusing moisture, using gentle techniques, and prioritizing her comfort at every step.

What is a Silk Press?

silk press is a professional technique for straightening very curly or coily hair (like 4C hair) using a combination of blow drying and flat ironing – with no chemical relaxers. The goal is to transform tight curls into silky straight hair temporarily. Unlike a chemical straightener, a silk press lets you enjoy smooth, sleek hair that can revert back to its natural curly state after washing. This makes it a great option for those who want a new look without permanently altering their curl pattern. I reassured my client that her hair’s health was the top priority; we’d get it silky smooth while avoiding heat damage, so her curls would bounce back whenever she’s ready.

Silk Press Process Step-by-Step

To give her the best smooth blowout in Tokyo, I followed a careful step-by-step process. Here’s how we achieved her silky straight look:

  1. Deep Cleansing & Treatment: First, I shampooed her hair thoroughly to remove any product buildup and ensure a clean start. After shampooing, I applied a deep conditioning treatment to restore moisture and softness. Then, I rinsed it out with warm water, leaving her hair hydrated and easy to manage.
  2. Gentle Blow Drying: Before blow drying, I applied a heat protectant product to shield her curls from heat damage. Using a special low-damage hair dryer (designed to minimize heat exposure), I blow-dried her hair on a gentle setting. I worked in small sections, using a round brush to stretch and smooth each section. This step turned her tight coils into a stretched-out afro, which already showed much less frizz thanks to the deep conditioning and careful drying technique. After this step, her hair was already nearly straight and ready for final styling.
  3. Silkening with the Flat Iron: Next, it was time to flat iron and truly “silk out” her hair. I applied a another heat protection and used a professional ceramic flat iron and worked in very small sections for precision. For each section, I combed through the hair with a fine-tooth comb (the chase method) while gliding the flat iron from roots to ends. This method ensures maximum smoothness and shine. I took my time on each section, using just enough heat to get her hair straight and glossy while avoiding unnecessary heat exposure. During this process, I continuously checked that the temperature was appropriate – hot enough to straighten, but not so high that it would damage her curls. The result was that her hair became incredibly sleek and silky straight.

Focus on Hair Health & Comfort

From start to finish, I prioritized my client’s hair health and comfort. I used moisture-rich conditioners and reliable heat protectants. By avoiding any harsh chemicals and using moderate heat, we kept her hair’s integrity intact. I also made sure she was comfortable at every step – whether it was ensuring the water temperature was just right during the wash or making sure the blow dryer and flat iron heat felt okay for her. No painful tugging, no surprise burns, and no unnecessary stress on the hair. The entire silk press was done in a calm, unrushed manner so she could relax and even enjoy the pampering!

Results: From Puffy to Polished

After – The result of the silk press: her formerly puffy curls are now straight, shiny, and full of movement. As you can see, her 4C hair transformed into a smooth, flowing style that has lots of body and shine. The dryness and frizz are gone – instead, her hair looks glossy and feels soft to the touch. Importantly, the health of her hair was maintained: there was no damage, and her natural curl pattern will return after her next wash. My client was thrilled with how light and silky her hair felt. She mentioned that it was the first time in a long while she’d been able to run her fingers through her hair and feel it so smooth.
